Student of the Year Candidate 2021
I joined the Student of the Year Campaign (currently Student Visionary) in memory of my late father, Diego, and in the ongoing fight against cancer. The campaign ran for seven weeks in honor of a high school student, Hannah Hermansen, who is currently in remission from non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
As my campaign started in 2020, I recognized that the challenges presented by COVID-19 meant we would need to take a novel fundraising approach. I implemented various new strategies and tactics to engage our community, such as creating a fundraising page with personalized videos and establishing an Events Committee, where members planned events to thank donors. Most importantly, working with individual donors throughout the year inspired me to initiate a corporate matching initiative for SOY.
The SOY Class of 2021 had 21 teams raising a total of $714,814; the highest in campaign history. My personal campaign raised $135,000, the second highest team in the Eastern PA region. I was recognized as the 2nd place winner for Student of the Year Campaign, and awarded the Impact Award, which connected Team Tobon's name to LLS-sponsored research grants supporting acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome research (2021).
